Greg Harper: A lot of people have archive footage. They have stuff on VHS tape, maybe eight millimeter, or even some of the new DV formats. Tapes are going to eventually deteriorate. What you want to do is end up with a copy that will last a lot longer. Fortunately, there is a very cool product that handles that very easily for you. This product here is a DVD recorder. Take a DVR, which is really inexpensive, put it in the machine, and close the door. Plug in your camcorder, VHS player, or your eight-millimeter player. All you have to do is press one button and it will copy all of the content on the DVD. Of course that gives the preservation, but it doesn’t give you the way of editing it all together. The bottom line is that editing is a really good idea. No one wants to sit through hours and hours of unedited footage. There are professional editing packages like Final Cut Pro and Avid, which the professionals use. Both of those now have consumer versions, which are very, very useful. It allows you to drag your scenes, put them into a timeline, put titles on it, and make transitions, effects, and all the rest. You can also cut out pieces you don’t want and keep the pieces you want, and you there have a movie. Not only will it give you a movie, but you also have multiple output formats. You can put it back on tape, you can output it directly to DVD, or you can drag it to your favorite site like SheZoom, where if you follow instructions it can be available to just your friends and family, or if your really care, the entire world. |
