Greg Harper: Many cars today come equipped with built in GPS’s. They’re really wonderful and I highly recommend them. However, if you don’t want to spend the extra money on a factory-installed system or if already have a car that doesn’t have one, there are other options that are quite good, and in some cases even superior. This is a portable GPS unit from Garmin. It’s nice because it will fit in your pocket, it does real time traffic updates, it has restaurant guides, and even does translation. So, if you’re in a foreign country all you have to do is push button and it can give you directions in the language of the country you are in. Another cool thing for the car is this little thing that connects to your license plate. It is in fact a backup camera, which allows you to look at see what’s happening behind you. You then have a small little receiver that receives the signal wirelessly from your backup camera. It mounts on your dashboard and plugs into your cigarette lighter and you can get the picture from your backup camera. Of course my favorite gadget for the car is this device here. This is a Wi-Fi router. Basically it turns your car into a mobile Wi-Fi access point. You simply buy a card from Verizon or Sprint, subscribe to the data services, and as long as you’re in a metropolitan area or along a major highway it gives you really great high-speed access. Anyone in the car with a Wi-Fi system can automatically access the internet, download music, receive email, or in fact surf the web, while you’re driving along at 60 miles an hour. |
