Charles Purdy: I’m Charles Purdy. Let’s talk about rude people, scoundrels. Etiquette does want you to do a little bit of the work in maintaining the peace in your community and social circle and that means putting up with a little bit of bad behavior. However, trust me on this, etiquette, in no way, wants you to let yourself be a doormat. In fact etiquette gives you a few powerful tools you can use to preserve your dignity and make your displeasure known. No, one of those tools is not a hammer. The first tool is, “agree to disagree.” This is something you should keep in mind when something like a political discussion has gotten out of hand and turned into name-calling. This is doing no one any good. This is changing no one’s mind. All it’s doing is compromising your dignity. The polite thing to do is agree to disagree. The second and most powerful tool in the toolbox of public disapproval is the cold shoulder. When people are really, really angry with someone they often want a snappy sarcastic insult or to deliver tirade. Trust me, if you’ve had the cold shoulder applied to you, it speaks far louder than any insult ever could.

I don't care at all for an argument myself. But if it comes down to it I agree to disagree
I like to hold my own if ! I'm dead right and am sure of it,but if the others don't want to hear
the way it is,I just walk away after saying my piece/advice thinking they can take it or leave it
it's kind of like the cold shoulder but with out hurting anyones feelings..Works for me!

Hello, Abby. Thank you for your comment. I can try to help further -- what do you mean by "doesn't work"? (That is, what is a desired result?) Let me know, and I'll see if I can't give you another solution. Best, Charles

i wish he had more solutions...what if the cold shoulder doesn't work?
